Ok so you've jumped on the crazy train and want to start a blog, and possibly try out affiliate marketing. You see influencers online marketing products, travel, lifestyle and you want to make money just like them while promoting your favorite products.
Should be easy, right? Wrong.
Affiliate marketing and starting a blog to make money takes time, and a lot of it. The best way to get a head start is by finding a niche for your blog.
What is a blog niche?
A blog niche, simply put, is a specific topic you will write about in your blog. Here is an example. Let's say you love sports.
You want to write your blog on sports because it is a topic you are passionate about. Unless you are trying to be the next ESPN or Barstool Sports, this is going to be a very hard niche to focus in on within your blog.
So, let's narrow the sports blog niche down to just one sport - basketball. This still may be too broad.
Let's narrow it down one more time, to high school basketball. This could be your blog niche, or you could narrow it down even further to a blog niche of High School Basketball in Wisconsin.
Blog Your Passion
You're probably asking yourself lots of questions like "How do I pick a name for my blog?", "How do I get people interested in my blog?", "How can I make money with my blog?".
These are great questions but the first question you should ask is: What is my passion?
Blogging can be quite boring if you aren't talking about your passions and what interests you most. Before doing any keyword research make a list of your passions and interests. This will be a good starting point to make blog writing fun and enjoyable. Maybe you have a ton of ideas, or you are struggling to find a blog niche. Either way, this brainstorm exercise is very helpful to get started on your blog.
Think about things in your daily life, topics that you talk with your friends about, maybe other blogs or magazines you read. For example, let's say you brainstorm 10 ideas:
Now that you've brainstormed a topic, try narrowing that topic down even further if you think it's too broad.
You are going to want to find a topic that you are passionate about, you have knowledge in the niche, and (optional) you can find it to be profitable.
Google Trends for Brainstormed Blog Niche ideas
You can start by plugging in some of your blog topic ideas into Google Trends. This will help you see if people are interested in your blog niche, along with the trend (increasing in interest or decreasing?).
It's pretty simple. Just enter in the term(s) you want to search in google trends and see their popularity. From the example below, high school basketball is more of a niche topic than coffee, so that is why coffee ranks so much higher.
You can also see an annual trend with high school basketball. I'm assuming this is around the end of year tournaments across the country.
SEO Keyword Research
If you're new to this you may not be familiar with the SEO keyword research, but it's vital for success and a key component to getting ranked on Google. Based on your blog niche, you're going to want to create a set of keywords that are sprinkled throughout your website. This master list of keywords will be used throughout your website and blog pages to help improve your ranking and drive traffic.
Keyword research will tell you things like how many people are searching for your keywords each month, the competition, and alternative keywords. You may even find a new blog niche from the keyword research.
Start by taking those blog niche ideas and plugging them into a keyword research tool like keywordtool.io. There are many similar keyword research tools out there.
You'll see many results, but they keywords you want to note are the ones that generally have:
At least a couple thousand searches per month
(Optional) Average Trend is + and Average CPC is high
It's kind of like the chicken and the egg here. What do you start with? SEO Keyword Research or finding your passion? In my opinion, I would start brainstorming what you are most passionate about. Then you establish some keywords from your SEO research and find your target audience.
